Song Ideas Pitch

Overview

Good Ideas
  • Theory of Opposites between 2 very different people in very different lifestyles
  • Use of 2 different narratives
  • Use of new creative camera shots such as POV from neck of guitar
  • Performance element where appropriate
  • Creative editing such as split screen between two characters
Feedback
  • Where to stage narratives?
  • Characters? how to make them very different
  • Linking split screen to lyrics
  • Twist at the end... maybe they 2 very different character meet
Changes after feedback

We are going to stage the narratives in everyday life places such as work, home. The difference between the characters will be very clear, one will be very aspirational, very clean. The other will be no bothered about life, maybe some scenes of drugs. The characters could be a boy and a girl, we could use classic stereotypes of men to portray the boy as the untidy, unruly person. The twist at the end could be them meerting up and starting a relationship, like in a lot of occasions, the girl sorts the boy out

Filming update

filming update
We filmed the last of our performance part on the 6th of September 2014. We could only film the guitars because the drum kit had been removed. We decided on some creative and interesting shots such as camera mounted to neck of the guitar. We had issue with lighting because of the varied time we shot at and after reviewing footage decided that the lighting had to be changed due to the poor lighting in the footage we had captured.

We also had problems with the size of the SD card in the camera and also the battery life. The SD card only had enough space for 2 hours of footage and the camera only lasted about an hour. We solve the storage problem by moving the footage on to a portable hard drive and deleting the footage off the camera, we did this when the camera was charging. Just to be safe we made a backup of the footage on a 16GB memory stick as a loss of footage would have been very detrimental to our video.

Lyrical Ideas

Annotations

  • Intro music - Focus on drums and guitar i.e. bass drum pedal and ride cymbal, and guitar intro
  • 'Alarm that I'm ignoring' - alarm going off in the background, out of focus, main focus on guy in bed
  • 'Waking up is hard to do' - over-shoulder of drums playing beat into chorus
  • 'Turn my head back to bead with no delay etc' - Mid shot of guitars, 360 degree filming of all band members
  • 'Doesn't even start till two?' - opposites, alarm clock being snoozed, alarm clock in focus
  • Instumental  - close up of guitars
  • 'Not be told what to do, or what to say' - Drums main focus... over-shoulder or high angle
  • 'Never boring...' - close-up of guitar 'chugging'
  • Verse 3  - Camera mounted to body of guitar, various narrative parts
  • Ring out - Close-up of guitar ringing out, cross fade to end narrative scene

Filming Update

we decide that it was best to film the band footage first as this would give us further time to make the narrative a strong and interesting part allowing us more time to rehearse and finalise ideas and props. we filmed a wide range of shots including close up's, mid shot's and 360 degrees shot, establishing shout, pov shot etc. Some of the troubles we had were keeping props in same place such as amps and cables and making sure that the guitars had not been marked or had dust on as this made footage look armature , also getting the light correct was difficult and keeping it consistent

Target Audience Member Profile

Target Audience Member Profile

Joshua Shardlow

Age - 17
Occupation - Student
Class - Middle/Working

What are your hobbies/interests?
Playing video games with my friends and listening to music
(we ask him this question to find out if he was interested in music, and if so, would be a great place to start the questions about music videos. it would of been a waste if he would of said he doesn't like listening to music)
What is your favorite genre of music?
Definitely rock
(This question was key because it states what his music interest is inBy saying rock we know that he is part of our target audience and we can continue to question him)

Why do you like Rock music?
I like the sound and the way the upbeat music makes you feel
(This question gives us an idea of what a person in our target audience finds interesting and enjoyable in rock music)

Any Rock musicians what stand out/you like to listen to?
The band 'Nirvana' really stands out to me and I enjoy listening to their music
(This question was asked to find any common ground between the artist/band he most enjoys to listen to and the creators of the song we have chose to do (Heart Attack by Sum 41). The band mentioned 'Nirvana' have the same music ideas as Sum 41 so we know that the interested might be matched in our music video)

What aspects of Rock music video do you enjoy seeing?
A narrative that moves you and you can relate to
(The answer to the question above is crucial because it shows what 3 types of music they enjoy to watch. He choice of music video type is the opposite to what we have chose but the content could be altered to incorporate a small narrative)

Do you prefer an narrative or performance based music video?
I like a narrative that is impacting but a cut between a narrative and performances is also pretty good.
(Like the question before this one, it asked what do you prefer in a rock music video, performance or narrativeThe answer given was narrative so we may have to do a bit of investigating into what narrative we could use at certain times such as a narrative regarding the lyrics)

We did this target audience member profile to give us some ideas of what the interests of a member of our TA and how we could adjust our ideas to suit them.

Target Audience Interview

Annotations

  • Chris Higgins said how the best and most enjoyable element of a rock music video is the performance, he states how he enjoys going to gigs and in a rock music video he would enjoy 'seeing them in action and performing live even though I am not there'. He states how the high tempo of a rock song is the reason why he prefers that genre over any other, the reason that was given was; 'it suits my personality because I'm a very active, sporty person'
  • Joshua Shardlow said how he enjoys seeing a narrative in a rock video that you can relate to. The reason why he prefers the genre of rock over other was the sounds in a rock song and the way it makes your feel. He says that in a rock music video he would like to see a performance which cuts to an appropriate narrative in certain places.
  • Kevin Mitson said how 'the artist playing the music and singing instead of a weird storyline' is the aspect of a rock music video he most enjoys. He states how he 'is not the one for romantic music' and how he prefers (classic) rock because it it done by proper musicians who know how to play there instruments properly and don't just rely on electronically formed music which he says he 'detests'. He prefers performance music videos because he enjoys 'seeing them doing there stuff, playing the music', he says he is not that keen on a narrative video even though some rock musicians do include it.

Key Findings
  • A large interest in performance based with a hint of a narrative to spice it up.
  • Main focus on the band then other actors
  • Editing to fit tempo of song
After analyzing the target audience research, we now know that a great element of our music video is going to be the performance. It will mostly likely be the main aspect but, regarding what Joshua Shardlow said about have a narrative in certain places, a narrative that address certain parts of the lyrics could be very creative.
